NetPort from Alpha Micro Components shortlisted for prestigious Network Awards 2004
 NetPort, the “plug and play” serial to Ethernet cable adaptor developed by Alpha Micro Components, has been short listed for the Network Cabling Product of the Year at the prestigious 2004 Network Awards. NetPort allows any device or machine with a serial port, to become network and Internet-enabled in an instant.
NetPort is targeted primarily at System Builders and OEMs who want to integrate Ethernet connectivity into their product designs without adding to the cost or time-to-market, as well as organisations that want to upgrade their legacy systems without replacing the entire IT infrastructure. The matchbox-sized NetPort features an integrated web server, meaning whatever it is attached to, can be “contacted” and monitored via a standard Internet browser. TCP/IP protocol stacks are embedded into the device meaning NetPort can operate within non-PC environments. Basingstoke-based Alpha Micro developed NetPort, based on the embedded device from Lantronix, Xport.

The judging panel, when looking at the contenders to make the short list for the Networking Cabling Product award, was looking for the most innovative products on the market today. They evaluated each entry on the following criteria: Functionality, features, innovation, performance, configuration, resilience, ease of use, price, fitness for purpose and market position, a tough list to match up to. NetPort is one of just three products to have met the demanding standards.
