“Ideal for commercial buildings, schools, factories, public facilities and retail stores, Miralite has been heralded as a truly green and sustainable solution that can be used to cut costs significantly.”

GPS technology from Alpha Micro Components fitted as part of the Miralite skylight from Area Energy is playing a crucial role in helping the unit track the sun and drive natural light into buildings - enabling businesses to turn off artificial lights for up to 10.5 hours per day, reduce their carbon footprint and dramatically slash their utility bills.

Once installed on a roof, Alpha Micro's u-blox Max 6 global positioning system (GPS) housed within the roof light determines the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of the unit and tracks the sun re-directing light down into the building below via carefully angled mirrors housed under the unit's glass dome.

Commenting on this latest development, Christos Papakyriacou, Managing Director, Alpha Micro Components said, "Ideal for commercial buildings, schools, factories, public facilities and retail stores, Miralite has been heralded as a truly green and sustainable solution that can be used to cut costs significantly. Savings on lighting and air conditioning, in excess of £150,000 per annum, can be made using 110 skylights on a building measuring 120m x 40m with a roof height of 8 metres and a lux level of 900lux at 2 metres - lighting levels previously provided by 490 x 250 watt metal halide electrical light fittings. Most importantly users can realise a return on investment in just 1.2 years.

"Other benefits include improved worker and student performance and speedier patient recovery where they are installed in hospitals due to exposure to natural sunlight."
