AX-SFEU - Low power, long range Sigfox System-on-Chip connectivity (standard FW)

AX-SFEU-1-01 and AX-SFEU-API-1-01 single chip solutions which provide low power, long range Sigfox connectivity for up-link and down-link requirements.

The AX-SFEU-1-01 and AX-SFEU-API-1-01 are single chip solutions for a node on the Sigfox network. Sigfox, the ultra low power connectivity solution, meets the Internet of Things (IOT) requirements for widespread coverage and ultra low power consumption for small amounts of data that technologies such as GPRS/UMTS/LTE cannot always provide.

The AX-SFEU-1-01 and AX-SFEU-API-1-01 chips are 7x5 mm2 RF microcontrollers with an ultra low power AX8052 MCU and an AX5043 transceiver ready to use on the Sigfox network.

The System-on-Chip solutions add Sigfox functionality for up-link and down-link to any existing system, only requiring a small footprint of 20x13 mm2 PCB area. They can also be used as single chip solutions that control small sensor nodes. The devices are fully programmed for immediate operation as a Sigfox node, while the AX-SFEU-API-1-01 chip addresses applications where the user wants to add additional software.

The AX-SFEU-1-01 chip is controlled by the Sigfox AT command interface accessible through a UART, the user cannot add any software to this device. For greater versatility, the AX-SFEU-API-1-01 chip addresses applications where the user wants to add software, thus avoiding the need for a second MCU in the system. Users need to access the AX-Sigfox-Library via an API. (The AX-Sigfox-Library has to be purchased once). For the API version, the AXCode::Blocks IDE is used to create a custom application. The MCU has 64 kBytes of FLASH memory of which more than 32 kBytes are available for the custom application. The MCU comes with many peripherals such as SPI master, UART, GPIOs, RTC, ADC, DAC and temperature sensor, which are available to the user program.

The AX5043 provides the radio for the AX-SFEU-1-01 and AX-SFEU-API-1-01. It can modulate and demodulate the Sigfox protocol in hardware, resulting in the lowest power consumption and MCU overhead. Due to the flexibility of AX-SFEU-API-1-01 it is possible to add other sub-1G stacks, making the AX-SFEU-API-1-01 an ideal solution for various application needs.

In the transmit direction +14 dBm can be achieved with 45mA. On the receive side 10mA is required when powered from a 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply. The performance is the same regardless of the supply voltage.

For optional software development of single chip applications with the the AX-SFEU-API-1-01 device, AXCode::Blocks IDE is used. It comes with state of the art development and debugging features as well as with the freely usable SDCC C-compiler.

The AX-SIGFOX library (AX-SF-LIB-1-GEVK) makes it possible to easily add SigfoxTm ultra low power cellular connectivity to a customer AX8052 project, which can then be programmed into the AX-SIGFOX-API chip. The AX-SIGFOX library, paired with the AX-SIGFOX-API chip, enables very low parts count internet of things enabled products.

DVK-SFEU-1-GEVK: Sigfox AT development kit for RCZ1

The miniature (15mm x 33mm) Sigfox development kit (DVK), DVK-SFEU-1-GEVK, allows designers to quickly develop Sigfox connected applications in the RCZ1 region using the AX-SFEU solution.

The DVK comes with a free two-year Sigfox subscription and is pre-programmed with the Sigfox stack and a comprehensive but easy to use serial protocol based on AT commands.

An external application processor is needed to use this solution. Designers who want to develop a self-contained Sigfox application should use the AX-SFEU-API solution.

The DVK is also a reference design. The designer can copy and paste the reference design to their application board and reuse the DVK Sigfox ready ™ certification (P1). The reference design has also been checked for regulatory compliance, minimizing risk for the customer's product level compliance.

The DVK has an SMA connector to allow for both conducted measurements as well as radiated measurements using the included whip antenna.

The DVK can be operated one of two ways:

1) Connected by ribbon cable to the included AXDBG-2-GEVK virtual COM port which allows a terminal emulator on a PC to communicate and operate the DVK interactively. Power supply current can be measured through a header on the AXDBG-2-GEVK board.

2) Or alternatively the designer can connect power, ground, and a UART to their application processor and use the DVK as a modem for their application. Please note that the UART operates at the voltage supplied to the kit and can be any voltage in the range of 2V to 3.3V.

DVK-SFEU-API-1-GEVK: Sigfox API development kit for RCZ1

The miniature (15mm x 33mm) Sigfox development kit (DVK), DVK-SFEU-1-GEVK, allows designers to quickly develop Sigfox connected applications in the RCZ1 region using the AX-SFEU-API SoC solution.

The DVK comes with a free two-year Sigfox subscription and is pre-programmed with the Sigfox stack and an example application that can be used as-is or extended. Approximately 40kB of FLASH is available for application code.

Included in the kit is the AXDBG-2-GEVK debugger used for debugging software and programming the FLASH.

To program the DVK, the designer needs to download the development tools and the API software library (link below in the Technical Documents table). The commercially available IAR 8051 compiler is also required. Documentation for the example application is included in the API software library.

The DVK is also a reference design. The designer can copy and paste the reference design to their application board and reuse the DVK Sigfox ready ™ certification (P1).
