GS1500M - Ultra low power 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi embedded module

The GS1500M is a fully certified module offering quick, easy and cost effective way for OEM's to enable leading edge Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g/n) in their platforms.

The GS1500M is a fully certified module offering quick, easy and cost effective way for OEM's to enable leading edge Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g/n) in their platforms. The module provides multiple serial UART or SPI interfaces, enabling connection to any embedded design utilizing a 8/16/32-bit microcontroller via simple commands. The GS1500M is an ideal solution for OEM's with no or limited Wi-Fi or RF expertise, as it dramatically reduces development time and eliminates the burden of testing and certification, allowing customers to exclusively focus on their core platform. The module supports Wi-Fi PHY rates up to 72.2 Mbps, is fully compliant with 802.11b/g/n and meets Wi-Fi Alliance and worldwide regulatory requirements. GS1500M also supports the newly available Wi-Fi Direct standard from the Wi-Fi Alliance. This enables the module with best-in-class peer to peer networking which allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to one another without an access point, enabling easy transfer of content anytime, anywhere.

Multiple software configurations are available for running a stack or network services on the module. For applications utilizing a small 8 bit microcontroller host, the module supports a serial to Wi-Fi function and runs the full Wi-Fi and TCP/IP networking stacks, completely offloading the host. For applications utilizing more powerful microcontrollers, the networking stack and services can reside on the host while the module provides the IP to Wi-Fi functionality. In addition, it supports WEP/WPA/WPA2 security, Ad-hoc and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for ease of provisioning.

The module SKU is single sided, pin compatible with the GS1011M module, with castellation on the edges for I/O connection so the module can be soldered down on customer application base-boards.

GainSpan modules are supplied in three pack sizes:

  • Sealed sample packs of 5 modules - ideal for evaluation, protoypes or small production runs of less than 50;
  • Sealed pilot packs of 50 modules - ideal for for pre-production or small production runs;
  • Sealed boxes of 250 modules - typically for higher volume production runs.

Evaluation Kit

The GS1500M EVK Mrk II Evaluation Kit provides engineers with the means to evaluate the capabilities of the GS1500M low power wireless module together with Serial-to-WiFi embedded software for Wi-Fi networks. The Serial-to-WiFi embedded software allows devices and appliances manufacturers to easily add Wi-Fi capabilities to their products with minimal impact on the host microcontroller firmware.GS1500MEvalKit

The GS1500M EVK Mrk II Evaluation Kit provides all the hardware and software necessary to quickly set up a serial (UART or SPI) based link to a PC or external microcontroller. In order to evaluate the ease of adding secure Wi-Fi communications to a product using the GainSpan AT command set, the kit includes all the software tools necessary for
configuration of Serial-to-Wi-Fi and GS1500M module, data transfer using "AT" command-set and protocol analyzer for validation of packet & frame fields.

Software Development Kit

The GainSpan Software Development Kit (SDK) Mrk II enables firmware engineers to extend middleware software or develop embedded applications for the GS1500M.

This SDK contains the development board with a GS1500M module, embedded software (source/binary code), configuration management system, firmware update system, networking middleware, RTOS, device drivers, an integrated development environment (IDE) and JTAG hardware. Two SDK options are available: Basic and Professional.

With the Professional SDK, software development teams have access to source code for the GainSpan embedded software and may design and run highly custom applications for the GS1500M modules. Software engineers may use, and modify, sample applications as a baseline for new applications. With most of the GEPS software available in source, software engineers can scale-down the binary size as necessary.

The Basic SDK allows software development teams to expand embedded web pages for device specific configuration (GainSpan provides Wi-Fi and IP network configuration pages) and expand the Serial to Wi-Fi interface software for custom APIs. Software engineers may extend basic capabilities of the firmware on the GS1500M Modules.
