The GainSpan GS1011M family of fully certified modules
offers a quick, easy and cost effective way for device and
appliance manufacturers to add 802.11 Wi-Fi capabilities to their
products.
The module provides a serial UART or SPI interface,
enabling connection to any embedded design utilising an 8/16/32-bit
microcontroller via simple commands. The GS1011M is an ideal
solution for company's with limited or no Wi-Fi or RF expertise, as
it not only dramatically reduces RF design time but also removes
the burden of testing and certification, allowing customers to
focus on their core application, product or expertise. The module
supports data rates up to 11 Mbps, is compliant with 802.11b and
meets regulatory and Wi-Fi Alliance requirements.
Multiple software configurations are available for the
stack running on the module. For applications utilising a small 8
bit microcontroller host, the module supports a serial to Wi-Fi
function and runs the full Wi-Fi and TCP/IP networking stacks,
completely offloading the host. For applications utilising more
powerful microcontrollers, the networking stack and services can
reside on the host while the module provides the IP to Wi-Fi
functionality. In addition, the GS1011M family supports
WEP/WPA/WPA2 security, Adhoc as well as Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
for ease of provisioning.
GainSpan modules are supplied in three pack
sizes:
- Sealed sample packs of 5 modules - ideal for evaluation,
protoypes or small production runs of less than 50;
- Sealed pilot packs of 50 modules - ideal for for pre-production
or small production runs;
- Sealed boxes of 250 modules - typically for higher volume
production runs.

Evaluation Kits
GainSpan's Serial-to-Wi-Fi Evaluation Boards
and Kits provide a fast and simple method for
engineers to evaluate the capabilities of GainSpan's GS1011
ultra-low power wireless system-on-a-chip and the Serial-to-Wi-Fi
embedded software for Wi-Fi networks. The Serial-to-Wi-Fi embedded
software enables faster time-to-market for new or legacy products
that need to add Wi-Fi to their designs, with minimal impact on the
host microcontroller firmware.

The Serial to Wi-Fi Evaluation Kit provides all the hardware and
software necessary to quickly set up a serial (UART) based link to
a PC or external microcontroller. In order to evaluate the ease of
adding secure Wi-Fi communications to a product using GainSpan's AT
command set, the kit includes all the software tools necessary for
configuration of Serial-to-Wi-Fi and GS1011 modules, data transfer
using "AT" command-set and protocol analyzer for validation of
packet & frame fields.
The Serial to Wi-Fi Evaluation Kit enables engineers to develop
software on their existing microcontrollers to support the "AT"
command set, and connect it to the serial interface on the
evaluation kit reference board.
The Evaluation Kits ship with serial-to-Wi-Fi binary pre-loaded.
Additional binaries are included in the kit to download to the
module for evaluating other features and capabilities such as Wi-Fi
Protected Setup (WPS), Enterprise Security (EAP), RF Testing and
Temperature and Light Sensing (TLS).
Software Development Kits
The GainSpan Software Development Kit
(SDK) enables firmware engineers to extend middleware
software provided by GainSpan or develop embedded applications for
the GS1011. Whether the design integrates the GS1011 module with a
host microcontroller (MCU) or uses the GS1011 SoC, developers have
increased design of and flexibility in firmware running on the
GS1011.
This SDK contains a development board with the GS1011MEE module,
embedded software (most in source code), configuration management
system, firmware update system, networking middleware, RTOS, device
drivers, an integrated development environment (IDE) and JTAG
hardware. Two SDK options are available: basic and professional
SDKs.
With the professional SDK, software development teams have
access to source code for the GainSpan embedded software and can
design & run highly custom applications for the GS1011 SoC and
GS1011 modules. Software engineers can use and modify sample
applications as a baseline for new ones. With most of the GEPS
software available in source, software engineers can scale-down the
binary size as necessary.
With the basic SDK, software development teams can expand
embedded web pages for device specific configuration (GainSpan
provides Wi-Fi and IP network configuration pages) and expand the
Serial to Wi-Fi interface software for custom APIs. Software
engineers can extend basic capabilities of the firmware on the
GS1011 Modules.
