Vinculum (VNC1L) - USB Host/Slave Controller IC

The VNC1L from FTDI was the first device to be released in the Vinculum product famility of Host USB controllers.

The VNC1L was the first device to be released from FTDI's new Vinculum range of Slave/Host USB Controllers.

Vinculum now makes it even easier to integrate USB functionality into your products and with the VNC1L device you can implement USB Host Controller functionality in no time at all.

As you would expect the device features FTDI's award winning, tried and tested, firmware which is stored on-board in flash and can easily be updated ensuring your products are future proof.

The VNC1L USB Host Controller ICs not only handle the USB Host Interface, and data transfer functions but owing to the inbuilt 8/32-bit MCU and embedded Flash memory, VNC1L encapsulates the USB device classes as well.  When interfacing to mass storage devices such as USB Flash drives, VNC1L also transparently handles the FAT file structure communicating via UART, SPI or parallel FIFO interfaces via a simple to implement command set.  The VNC1L device features two USB Ports which can be individually configured by firmware as Host or Slave ports. 

VNC1L brings cost effective USB Host capability to products that previously did not have the hardware resources available.  We anticipate that these devices will be especially popular for adding USB Flash drive connectivity to a wide range of consumer and industrial products.  As VNC1L comes complete with FTDI's in-house developed firmware, there are no USB software stacks to license, indeed, no knowledge of USB is required to use these devices.

With the VNC1L you can now connect USB Flash Drives to MCU's via a UART or parallel FIFO interface or connect Digital Cameras, PDA's and other USB slave peripherals to USB Flash Keys and other USB slave devices in stand-alone mode.

V-EVAL Development Board with 5V/1A universal plug top PSU and USB A/B cable.

VPROG-1 Programmer module designed to support the programming multiple VNC1L devices. The module can also be used to program the VDIP1 and VDIP2 (Vinculum VNC1L- 1A evaluation boards). The VPROG-1 programmer requires either a VPROG-1-S-LQFP48 or a VPROG-1-S-ZIF40 adaptor connected to it to allow programming of the Vinculum host controller devices.

The V-EVAL Kit is a hardware platform that designers can use to developV-EVAL-Board-300px embedded USB host systems based on FTDI's VNC1L devices. Designs can be rapidly debugged using the "spy" mode of the supplied V-EVAL software which displays the data sent between the VNC1L UART and a controller UART, for example a PIC.

V-EVAL Development Board key features include:

Custom PID service
For volume applications Alpha Micro can provide a Product Identifier (PID) under the FTDI "umbrella scheme" that can be used to personalise a design based on the FT232Bx so that your end user will see your product name in the Windows Install Wizard for extra brand awareness.

There is an added benefit that the driver is tagged to your hardware and cannot be used by other devices. This feature can only be used with FTDI chips, the Vendor ID (VID) must remain untouched. Please contact our sales team for more information on this facility.

Customers should use MPROG to program this feature and any other changes to the default settings within the EEPROM (which must be fitted if this feature is required). MPROG is free to use and performs the programming tasks over the USB.
