DB9-USB - Serial to USB Modules

The FTDI range of DB9-USB serial to USB modules provide a simple and fast method of migrating existing DB9 based RS232 connector interfaces to USB 2.0, without the need for any board re-design.

The FTDI DB9-USB module makes light work of migrating your existing designs from RS232 to USB as it runs standalone and therefore requires no processor overhead and no embedded USB stack.

As with all FTDI devices the hard work has been done for you, and in the case of the DB9-USB, you simply replace your existing DB9 connector and choose the royalty-free drivers which suit your application best. In simple terms the DB9-USB can be dropped in to replace most DB9 male or female connectors in an existing design to provide a full USB Slave interface to your product. All the processing of the USB stack, USB transceiver and signal conditioning is carried out by the DB9-USB module which requires no external circuitry.

The module uses a standard USB-MINI-B connector for connection to an upstream host or hub port. RS232-level signals, including modem handshake signals, can transmit data at rates up to 1 Mega Baud.

The DB9-USB module requires USB device drivers, available free from www.ftdichip.com, which are used to make the DB9-USB appear as a Virtual COM Port (VCP). This allows existing serial communications software, such as HyperTerminal, to exchange data through the DB9-USB to a legacy RS232 peripheral device.

The DB9-USB family consists of 6 modules. Two of these operate at RS232 voltage levels - these can be used as a direct replacement, with no PCB changes, in a system which uses RS232 levels, while four of them operate at digital voltage levels (a choice of 5V or 3.3V) - these can be used to interface to an application systems logic level which could result in the bill-of-materials being reduced by the removal of any RS232 level shifters which may be present in the system. Each is available to replace either a male or a female DB9.
