UDS1100 / UDS1100-PoE Single Port External Device Servers

UDS1100 / UDS1100-PoE Single Port External Device Servers

Serial to Ethernet device networking is what powers M2M (machine to machine) communication. The UDS family of device servers enables users to connect, manage and control just about any piece of equipment with a serial port from virtually anywhere over Ethernet or the Internet.

With the UDS1100, virtually any piece of equipment can be added to an Ethernet network in a matter of minutes! This single-port serial to Ethernet device server is a quick, simple and inexpensive way to bring the advantages of remote management to equipment not currently connected to a network.

How It Works

Lantronix's approach to network-enabling is transparent to your attached devices and software. So, you won't need to change the way you work, and there's no need to develop special software to take advantage of Ethernet networking.

Using a method called serial tunneling, the UDS1100 encapsulates serial data into packets and transports it over Ethernet. Serial tunneling can be done in two ways:

  1. Using Lantronix supplied Com Port Redirector™ software, Windows® device applications not designed for network communications are re-directed to communicate to devices connected to the UDS1100.

  2. Connecting two UDS1100 device servers configured to automatically talk to each other over the network creates virtual serial connections that can extend serial communications across a facility or around the world.  The built-in web server enables users to access and configure the UDS1100 from a standard web browser.

Web pages enabling the UDS1100 to be customized for unique applications can be built using Lantronix development tools. On-board Flash memory provides room for future system software upgrades and maintenance-free, non-volatile web page storage.

4 simple options to adapt your device to a networked device:

Virtual Com Ports (VCP's)
The included Redirector software simplifies your integration process by extending the functionality of your COM port-based Windows® applications. With virtual COM ports mapped to remote Device Servers on the network, you can replace direct serial connections. No changes required to your existing software.

Modem Emulation
In modem emulation mode, the UDS-1100 is used to replace dial-up modems. The unit accepts basic modem AT commands on the serial port, then establishes a TCP/IP connection to the end device utilising gateways and bandwidth to eliminate dedicated modems and phone lines.

Direct TCP/IP connection
If VCP's are not feasible then you can integrate connections to the UDS via a 'Direct Socket' (also known as Winsock). This is particularly suitable for large software applicatiosn running many hundreds of device servers.

Serial Tunnelling (Point to Point)
The UDS-1100 encapsulates serial data into packets and transports it over Ethernet. Using two UDS's connected by a network, virtual serial connections can be extended across a facility or around the world.

The UDS-1100 even includes a built-in Web server, which can be used for configuration, or to display operating and troubleshooting information on the attached links to online support.

Utilities
The provided Windows-based configuration software (Device Installer) simplifies installation and setup. The UDS-1100 can also be set up locally through its serial port, or remotely over a network using Telnet or a Web browser.

Total Com Port Control with TruPort Technology
Built into the included Com Port Redirector software, TruPort® technology enables Windows-based applications to access and control serial ports on the UDS1100 as if they were actually local PC serial ports. The application can monitor and set hardware pins on the UDS1100 serial ports as well as access serial buffers for total Com port control. This allows existing applications to seamlessly transition from controlling local devices to true remote monitoring and control of devices around the world.UDS1100-B Embedded Device Server

UDS-1100 device servers are also availble in un-housed PCB format for embedding within machines, as the UDS-1100B. For OEMs and system integrators they offer easy-to-implement solutions across almost any network, providing distributed intelligence to thousands of devices.

The Modules eliminate the need to invest engineering resources to develop similar networking solutions and reduce the time it takes to bring intelligent devices to market. Additionally, UDS board products can be a cost-effective alternative to dedicated PCs or lengthy serial cables with fast and reliable networking technology, and bring several new features and enhancements to the embedded product line.

Ideas and Help

Have you considered NetPort?

For certain specific applications where custom features are required such as RS232 only, smaller size or weight, power-sharing the PSU, bespoke cable adaptors and specialized firmware or re-branding we can offer the NetPort device server.AMC NetPort - Serial to Ethernet Adaptor

Based on the Xport device server it behaves almost identically to the UDS family, with the same config menu's, tools and utilities so you can migrate your accumulated knowledge straight over to NetPort with confidence. For more info click here...
